The collection of verse comprises poems (1)'Cowpers Lyre' dated 'Aug 1 1806'; (2) 'The flight of the Muses: respectfully inscribed to B--ns' dated 'Aug 13 1806' and addressed to Robert Burns; (3) 'Contemplation' includes corrections by the author, addressed to B-- A-- , dated 'Aug 16 1806'; (4) 'The Biter himself bit' addressed to Mrs B-- A-- , dated 'Aug 17 1806'; (5) 'The Monody', 'altered Aug 17 1806'; (6) 'To John Wylde on his not returning a pair of boots he had to mend, after repeated equivocations' dated 'Sept 3 1806'; (7) 'To my father on my attaining the age of twenty one Sept 28 1806' dated 'Sept 26 1806'; (8) 'Sonnet addressed to [left blank]', first line reads 'When wintry clouds deform the sky', dated 'Sept 27 1806'; (9) 'A Song', first line reads 'Ye friends who're assembled to night', dated 'Sept 29 1806'; (10) 'To Mr M T Sadler' dated 'Jan[ua]ry 10 1807'; (11) 'An Acrostic on a Mourning-Ring "Memento Mori"' dated 'Jan[ua]ry 12 1807'; (12) 'Fragments', first line reads 'That living fire which raises fancy, paints', dated 'Dec 1806'; (13) 'Impromptu', first line reads 'Oft in silent walks I've stray'd', dated 'Jan[ua]ry 1806'; (14) 'Impromptu: On hearing some Sacred Music' dated 'July 1806'; (15) 'Fragments on the death of Nelson' dated 'Cetera desunt [=the rest is missing] Dec 1805', followed by six lines in the later (early 19th century?) hand probably providing the continuation to the poem; (16) 'Sonnet for Miss M H on lending her Bloomfields farmer's boy to peruse' dated 'March'; (17) 'An Election Song or Sykes Triumphant' [the great book collector Sir Mark Masterman Sykes was elected MP for York in May 1807]; (18) 'An address to the free born Electors of the City of York from their ancestors in the shades on the successful termination of a late contest' accompanied with a note 'appeared in the York Chronicle May 1807'; (19) 'To my father on the Anniversary of his Birth March 8 1807'.

Michael Sadler, 1780-1835, was born in Snelston, Derbyshire. While he was still young he assisted the Methodist movement. In 1800 he moved to Leeds where he became an importer of Irish linens. He was Tory MP for Newark, 1829 and 1830, and for Aldborough, North Yorkshire 1831-1832. He moved unsuccessfully for the establishment of poor law in Ireland, and moved resolution for improving the living conditions of the agricultural poor in England, 1831. English bibliophile, picture collector, and member of Parliament for Sledmore in Yorkshire where his estate was located. Sykes' library was considered one of the finest in England and was especially strong in early printed editions of the Greek and Roman classics, incunables, and 16th century English poetry.
